The Plan
4 Nights at the RAVC Inverloch- less one night as work got in the way! So we left early Friday morning and arrived at the RACV resort at around 10am ready for a coffee ☕️ and scones. Watched the set up of a long lunch for the Melbourne good food and wine weekend, which would of been lovely as the wind dropped off and turned into a pleasant day.
After our coffee we went and set up the caravan and headed off for a walk around Screw creek via the foreshore camping grounds in Inverloch, which we had to ourselves. Put him in the naughty corner
After our walk, we went in to the town to do a few things and went and found Peters old mate Pat and his wife Bev for a couple frothies!
Day 2 Inverloch – Bit of a sleep in and straight into today’s activities, a bike ride into town with a few views on the way!
Coffee and ride back to the resort and quick chill before a beach session at the Inverloch surf life saving beach. Peters happy place, one seeing me actually get in the water and 2 being dumped, at least he saved my sunglasses. Pretty nice beach too!
5pm happy hour is calling, but not before a quick swim, sauna, and spa back at the RACV resort as you do. Then happy hour and crank up our Spotify before dinner! Bbq more beer bed!
Sunday- Today the plan was to go to the Inverloch farmers market for some supplies, until a mini cyclone hit! The morning was horrendous, wind and rain, so we stayed in the van until it had passed watched a dvd The Kings Speech for the 2 or 3rd time, Geoffrey Rush is so good. When the rain stopped we headed off for a drive, in luck a few market stalls still standing, felt sorry for the poor guys as the morning weather was so bad, bought some bits and had some yummy Mexican food. Left to fill in the day for a drive to Wonthaggi for some retail therapy, more DVDs, Big Little lies which we later got hooked on! Back to the van in time for happy hour at the bar, where we saw on the news, fires in Tathra, holy shit an end to that plan! How things can change in a flash! In the morning Lisa and Roger had posted a Instagram beautiful Tathra morning hike along the cliffs, I commented enjoy lucky things with the weather. Little did they know they would be running for their life’s just a few hours later.
We spoke to Roger not long after they found their way to Bermagui not knowing if they had lost their car or van, feel for everyone going though these terrible fires.
Celebrated our anniversary at the RACV restaurant which was really nice with seats by the stunning views out to sea. 🍾🥂🍷🍺
5 Nights at Wilsons Promontory- ah maybe as the weather is not what was ordered! We left Inverloch at 10am arrived here at around 11:30, spoke to Lisa and Roger along the way, and the Tathra plans have now gone out the window! Set up quickly and had a bowl of soup and headed off for a walk in the 35km knot winds, luckily in the tracks it’s fairly protected. Dinner and a bit more Big Little Lies- ah can’t wait for more! It’s got us and a windy night, so much so put the slide in in.
Tuesday 21 March. Kirsties porridge recipe for breakfast then off to the Mt Oberon Summit Walk, not a fan of up hill walks but so friken happy I made it as the views are absolutely spectacular, glorious amazing 😉 wow happy place big big time! And the weather man is on drugs never ever going to go off weather reports again. Loved the fact made it up to the summit and the walk back was so much nicer!
Next stop Squeaky Stunning beach followed by lunch, sleep for peter in the chair.
Then beach time by Tidal river, roast on while Peter fishes.
Wednesday
Leaving two days early due to very windy weather and our campsite is a dusty dreary site, note to self don’t bother getting a powered site at wilsons prom as they are the worst ones. Left around twelve and our first stop for lunch in Sale at Raymond’s and back on the road. Bought the Camps 9 in Sale and thought we might give the free camping a go. First fail at Metung as the site was already full and to small, so next try the Lakes Entrance reserve. Booked in as this one is not free, $25 bucks a site between the footy oval and the lake, not to bad! It’s only for the night so it’s worked out fine, before we get going in the morning to Bemm River to see what all the fuss is about, and Peters dream of catching a few 🐟🐟🐟
Thursday
This morning we quickly got going, and decided to head back to Bairnsdale to get a few things fixed at the Jayco dealership. As we left the van for a few hours, found an old fashion cafe and had breakfast. Peter went and washed the car while I got a bit of retail therapy in. By the time we got the van back around 2pm we headed back on the road to Bemm River to tick off Peters must see list. Arrived at around 4:30 set up, nice site looking at the lake. Had tea in the Van and attempted to watch The Handmaidens tale, freaky who writes this stuff seriously. So many girls have told me this series is fantastic, I’m thinking I’ve got a few freaky people in my life. Peter was like you can’t watch this, it’s not your thing, hours later he’s right the nightmares start.
Friday
This morning Peter was hanging to get his fishing rod out so off down the pier to try his luck. Four undersize fish about an hour later quit, patience is not his thing!
So we went off for a drive to where Fitta recommended we go Pearl Point, in the Cape Conran National Park and not disappointed beautiful beaches and not another soul!
Back about two and Lou and Knuckels arrived, set up and few beers later we took them down to the beach.
Tonight we walked down to the pub and had dinner at the Bemm River hotel, the food was fabulous no one goes hungry there! lucky we walked home to work a bit of this off!
Saturday
Woke early as it was raining and left everything out last night, to late to heavy rain to get everything in. Peter went off for another try fishing the piers around Bemm River, no luck. We went off for a drive to Marlo Pub for lunch and a bit of a look around the town, which was nice.
Then off to find a spot I found on instagram the Bemm River recreation reserve, Mckenzie falls walk, which was a surprise as its right beside the highway, a road side stop and is a really lovely small walk around the rain forest.
Called into this little pub of the highway for the boys to have a couple of beers, we where about the only people to stop for the day. The owner Lexie was a real character. As we sat on the front deck a couple more cars pulled up, one family from Holland and the other from Germany asking us about the best places to stop ect, both really interesting families.
Sunday
We left Bemm River early, for Pambula as we could not get into Tathra yet due to the fires. First stop Cann River for coffees at the favorite bakery, and a quick walk up the street to the lovely little church here.
Pambula caravan park and a few friends waiting around.
We checked in set up and a drive around as again the weather is crap, down to the oyster farm, the Oakland’s Brewery and then the Pambula pub, thankfully we didn’t stay long as there was a drunken bar fly hanging around.
Off for a drive into Merimbula for some groceries. A walk up the street and a coffee at Mormors , then our Merimbula tradition walk up the lake. Within five minutes and Peter runs into a builder he used to work for. Ended up meeting his partner and walked on with them, nice lady!
Peter broke out the new paddle board finally at the inlet, a tad windy. As we where leaving Lou and Knuckels had walked up, knuckels jumped in our car. So I walked back with Lou via the beach – wrong way so back to the path, which was a really nice walk.
Back to the Pambula caravan park, a swim for Peter, sunbake for me and who should also be staying there Mirielle, so I finally got to have a cuddle of her gorgeous baby girl Odiana. My happy place!
Happy hour and Lou did dinnner.
Tuesday
Finally woke up to Sunshine ☀️ this morning! So off for a walk along Pambula Beach which was so nice, before we packed up to move up to Tathra. While Peter packed the van up I went to the bakery and picked up his jumper being mended in Merimbula, came back and we moved up the coast.
Coming into Tathra a little spokey with so much aftermarth of the fires the week before, as you can see by the following photo.
Set up Peter and I went for a walk and checked out the other camp site down the road and the damage at the caravan park again over the road. Caught up with Lou and knuckels and went for a drive with them around town, checked out the damage from the fires. Quite unbelievable how the fires flattened homes but left others close untouched, very confronting.
After that a couple of beers at the beautiful Tathra Hotel, then a couple more at the Local Bowling club.
As I was pretty excited to see Kirstie and Jack, had to do the mother thing. A home cooked meal, lots of Veges and fish bought from the Mr Whippy of the fish world, fish truck through Pambula caravan park the night before. A few issues with the Van oven, note to self – don’t put stove lid down when cooking in the oven. So there for we got the Webber out. Around 8ish these two rocked up, dinner and a fun night playing Uno. Of course we know how had to win, or keep winning one bloke who had had a lot of beers by this stage!
Wednesday 28th of March
Kirstie and Jack stayed the night in their van on the way from Sydney to Bells beach for Easter, so we had breakfast in the Camp kitchen. Then headed off, to check the surf at Tathra which was not happening a quick skate and off to Pambula for a quick surf before their long drive.
Before Kirstie and Jack left we had lunch at Oakland’s in Pambula.
It is a funny kind of place, as it is a nursery, coffee shop, antique shop, gift shop, brewery and wedding venue, farm too. It has a really good feel to it and we had a bit of fun, kirstie nearly got kicked by a horse and got up close to a pig. Their Ginger beer is delicious and the boys where happy with their beers and the Pambula Oysters. After saying goodbye to Kirstie and Jack we headed jack to Tathra. Next I booked myself in the local beauty place for a pedicure, lovely view out to the wharf which was nice. Peter fluffed around the van and had a swim out the front of the caravan park.
Happy hour at our van with lou and Knuckels, more Pambula oyster that got Peter in, advertising $8 a dozen, yeah but there not chucked!
Followed by a concert with Frankie J Holden and his band at the Park.
This turned out to be a really fun night, dancing and meeting some really nice people, yep joining this —— nomad thing! Lots of thanking people re the fires, and one of the guests donated a bottle of Veuve to auction off, for the fire appeal which Peter won. = Nice day and night!
Thursday
Peter left for Bermagui at 6am for a fishing charter, and Lou and Knuckels left at 7am for their next camp site. Which has given me time to catch up writing this up.
Long day for Peter as he left early and arrived back at 4:30 a very happy man!
